ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

UTP’s Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETaL) was formally established in Nov 2014, with the aim of advancing and innovating teaching and learning within the university. The Centre focuses upon three key areas, namely Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), Enabling Technologies (ET) and Enabling Learning (EL), within the context of engineering and technology education.

WHAT WE DO

Given the requirement of 21st century education to solve 21st century grand challenges and the emergence of millennials, the way we approach and design teaching and learning has also evolved . The problems that we face now and in the future require more interdisciplinary approaches, greater communication among team members, as well as deeper thinking, and thus it could not be solved alone. At the same time, we are facing with our future graduates who also have a short span of attention, lack of interest in STEM education and lack of perseverance. At the same time, technology is seen to be playing a game-changing role in the higher education classroom, especially in relation to academia-learner engagement. If we do not provide the right environment for learners to use technology, the technology itself will distract the students away from our teaching and learning activities. This is where Active Learning is seen to play a dynamic role.

OUR OBJECTIVE

CETaL will be the catalyst to encourage lecturers to be innovative in designing flexible models of learning, besides tracking the rapid changes in educational and mobile technologies and online learning that is evolving the nature of knowledge itself.

CETaL will enhance the technological infrastructure for effective teaching and learning, and provide research opportunities for the innovation in developing new learning technologies and learning analytics.

CETaL will look into the use of technological devices for academic delivery with the aim of providing flexible learning to meet learners’ diverse knowledge needs.

CETaL will also provide promotion pathways which can lead to professorship for lecturers who have developed innovative teaching and learning methods and shown excellence in teaching
